Students entering into the Information Technology program will have the opportunity to receive certifications in the general areas of Computer Servicing and Networking. In their sophomore year students enter into the A+ IT Technician Program. This CompTIA Certification Program covers the basic skills needed to receive the A+ Essentials certification. Students then have a choice of a second exam which is necessary for the Industry recognized certification. Their choices are: IT Technician (220-602), Remote Support Technician (220-603) or Depot Technician (220-604). Students must pass both the essentials and one of the extended choice exams to achieve their A+ Certification.
In their junior year students will attend our authorized Cisco Networking Academy. Students will start with “Networking for Home and Small Businesses” in the first 2 terms and take their first academy certification test. They will then study “Working at a Small-to-Medium Business or ISP” and take their second academy certification test. At the successful completion of these two tests they will be eligible to take the ICND1 test for the Industry recognized entry level networking certification. In both of the above courses, students will learn from on-line curriculums, up to date books, lab manuals and hands-on activities. Students will also participate in real-life repairs and upgrades as computers come in to the shop to be repaired. In their senior year, many students are offered cooperative work placement. Positions offered are typically helpdesk technicians, entry level repair technicians and disassembly/assembly of computers.
As part of the curriculum for sophomores, juniors and seniors, students will learn some basics in Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, XHTML programming, Visual.Net Programming, PHP, SQL and software configurations. Students will also have an opportunity to join and compete in Skills USA and Business Professionals of America competitions at local, state and national levels.
